Reading Strategy Focus
ADJUSTING RATE OF SPEED STRATEGY: Experienced readers will slow down and possibly re-read text to not miss important information (dates, facts, etc) or to understand challenging texts or new information
IMAGERY: How does the author help us to visualize what is happening in the story? This author uses our five senses to describe details of the weather (sights and sounds) and details of the game (sounds and smells).
SUMMARIZING: When the reader is able to identify the topic and the most relevant details of the non-fiction text. Experienced readers are using summary skills to better understand texts.
INFERRING: When the reader has to take clues from the author's style of writing to figure things out. Experienced readers combine what they already know in the non-fiction text, background knowledge and the clues that the author provides to make inferences.
DRAWING CONCLUSIONS: Readers must use what they already know combined with the facts the author states in the non-fiction text. Experienced readers are able to draw conclusions about why something happened based on those two things.
CAUSE AND EFFECT: When an event in a non-fiction text causes something else to happen. Experienced readers are better able to understand the cause and effect in a text so they are better able to understand the text.
CONNECTIONS: Text-to-text connections are when a reader can make a comparison between two books. Text-to-Self connections are when a reader can make a connection from the text to his/her life. Text-to-World connections are when the reader can make a connection to something that has happened in real life. Experienced readers make these connections when reading.
